Recommended as the first of three top restaurants in the Athens area.
Elite Traveler Magazine, Mar/Apr 2002
Sole recommendation for Best Local Cuisine.
Chicago Tribune, April 16, 2000
“Although the area itself remains a charming, hauntingly historical place to wander, many of Plaka’s restaurants are earning well-deserved reputations for shoddy food and service. A great exception in the Plaka is the resplendent Daphne’s, set in a 19th century townhouse now adorned with Pompeii-like frescoes and an enclosed garden. The food is refined Classic Greek: pork with celery and egg lemon sauce, fricassee of melt-off-the-bone lamb with greens, beef with olives. This is where Hillary Rodham Clinton dined when she was in Athens last year. For Plaka, Daphne’s is new and out of the ordinary.”
Herald Tribune, Aug 27, 1999
“There are Pompeiian frescoes on the walls and fragments of an ancient Greek building in the garden on Daphne’s, (Plaka), a lovingly restored neo-classical townhouse. Traditional dishes -rabbit in mavrodaphne sauce- are prepared with a light nouvelle Greek touch. The food, service and beautiful surroundings make Daphne’s very popular; reservations essential.” Sunday Observer, summer 1999
Recommended as the first of three top restaurants in the Athens area in the section “What about a night out?”
Financial Times, March 7/8 1999
“The Plaka area, at the foot of the Acropolis, was formerly the city’s red light district: it appeal nowadays is broader and more stylish, the choice of tavernas huge, the bills of fare limited.
You might consider something more discreet; perhaps Daphne’s, a beautifully refurbished 19th century townhouse. Classic Greek mezethedes include beans in tomato sauce, spinach pies, ouzo-flavoured meat balls and fried haloumi cheese.
Main courses include: braised lamb, melting off the bone, with lettuce (or artichokes) and an egg and lemon sauce; or veal Smyrna style. There is also fish, beef and souvlakia from the grill, Greek pastries and fresh fruit.
